A group of WTO member countries, including Brazil, Canada and the European Union, have urged India to submit timely notifications on sugar subsidies in the World Trade Organisation, an official said. The issue came up for discussion during the meeting of the WTO's agriculture committee on May 23-24 in Geneva.

The Indian government has set the foodgrains production target at 340.40 million tonnes (mt) during the 2024-25 crop year (July-June), which includes 159.97 mt from the kharif season, 164 mt from rabi season and 16.43 mt from zaid (summer) season.

India's coffee exports rose by 12.22 per cent to USD 1.28 billion in 2023-24 on higher demand for Robusta coffee in the global markets, according to the commerce ministry data. The country exported coffee worth USD 1.14 billion in 2022-23.

The wheat procurement during the 2024-25 season that normally ends in three months (April-June) has surpassed last year’s total of 26.2 million tonnes (mt) mainly due to robust purchases made in Punjab and Haryana, which also are the hotbed of farmer protests in the last few years.
