Onion export and wheat stocking restrictions: Open up the field.
The Narendra Modi government last week lifted a ban on exports of broken rice, in place since September 2022. It’s high time that it also scraps the 20 per cent duty on onion exports and stockholding limits on wheat. The reason is that the harvesting of both crops is underway. According to the agriculture ministry, farmers have sown 324.9 lakh hectares (lh) under wheat and 10.3 lh under onion in the current rabi season, as against 318.3 lh and 8.6 lh last year.

Malda’s Ashwina mango: The ‘king of chutneys’ in the race for GI tag.
The world-famous mangoes of Malda are once again in the spotlight. Following the successful Geographical Indication (GI) tagging of Fazli, Himsagar and Lakshmanbhog mangoes, the district administration has now taken steps trying to secure the prestigious GI tag for the Ashwina mango. The Horticulture department has already applied to the Registrar of Geographical Indications, believing that recognition will significantly enhance Malda’s mango industry.

Boosting dairy and livestock growth a major initiatives in Marathwada, Maharashtra.
The Government of India, in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Government, is making significant strides in enhancing dairying and animal husbandry in the Marathwada region through various initiatives. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) has been implementing multiple schemes, including the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), and National Livestock Mission (NLM), among others, to improve milk production, strengthen infrastructure, and boost farmers' income.

India reports record rice, wheat, and maize harvests in 2024-25 season.
The total production of kharif cereals was 166.39 million tonnes and that of rabi cereals was 164.53 million tonnes. The production of kharif rice is estimated at 120.68 million tonnes, 7.42 million tonnes more than that of 2023-24 (113.26 million tonnes). Rabi foodgrains production was 15.76 million tonnes.

London gets a taste of Odisha’s green papayas.
Green papaya cultivated by tribal women farmers in remote locations of Odisha will now find themselves on the dining tables of London citizens. Grown by a group of 14 women farmer members of the Saptasajya Agro Producer Company of Dhenakal in Odisha, it is the first-even shipment by an FPO in Odisha to London. The FPO exported one tonne of locally-grown premium quality green papaya. Amit Patjoshi, CEO of Palladium Consulting India Pvt Ltd, which was involved in the shipments, said green papaya has good demand in countries such as the UK and Ireland.

Tur procurement under Price Support Scheme reaches 1.31 lakh tons: Agriculture Ministry.
The Centre has procured 1,31,000 tonnes of tur so far under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), benefitting 89,219 farmers, the agriculture ministry said on Thursday. Under the PSS for the 2024-25 Kharif season, the ministry has approved the procurement of a total of 13.22 lakh tonnes of tur from nine states -- Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said that he had a 'forward looking' discussion with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement. 'Our approach will be guided by 'India First', 'Viksit Bharat' and our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,' the Commerce Minister wrote on his X timeline, sharing a photograph of the meeting.

India-New Zealand FTA talks back on track after 10 years.
India and New Zealand on Sunday announced the resumption of negotiations for a proposed free trade agreement, after it was stalled in 2015 following their failure to narrow differences in sensitive areas including dairy and agriculture. India and New Zealand began negotiating the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) in April 2010 to boost trade in goods, services, and investment but the talks stalled after nine rounds of discussions. The ninth round of negotiation was held in 2013.

India, China outperform global trade in 2024, trade resilience stressed in 2025: UNCTAD.
China and India outperformed global trade averages in 2024, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in its Global Trade Update Friday. It said that trends like the widening deficits of the US and EU with China along with India’s rising deficit with Russia amid shifting energy trade could prompt new tariffs, restrictions, or investment shifts, adding to economic uncertainty.
