Maharashtra’s pomegranate farmers have made a remarkable comeback despite facing natural adversities over the years. According to the Agriculture Department, the state has exported 22,360 tons of pomegranates in the past nine months, contributing 78% of the country’s total exports. This positions Maharashtra as the top exporter of pomegranates in India.

Nearly three years after repealing the reform-oriented farm laws due to farmers' protest, Centre has now come out with a draft national policy framework on agriculture marketing suggesting states move towards a 'unified national market for agriculture produce' through single licensing /registration system and single fee.

India has witnessed a tenfold rise in exports of bananas in the past decade and is now targeting $1 billion in banana exports in the next five years after successful trial shipments to the Netherlands via the sea route, according to the Centre’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

India's overall exports of goods and services in 2024 has estimated to cross USD 814 billion, an increase of 5.58 per cent, according to a report by economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). In 2023, the country's merchandise and services exports stood at USD 768.5 billion.

The commerce ministry's arm APEDA has revised the NPOP's regulations to make it more farmer-friendly and help India achieve USD 2 billion exports target for organic food products by 2030, a government official said.

Traditionally a tea exporter, India is making significant inroads into the global coffee export market with total exports during the current financial year up to November crossing the $1-billion mark for the first time, according to data from Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

The share of processed food exports within agri-food exports has significantly increased, rising from 13.7 per cent in 2014-15 to 23.4 per cent in 2023-24.
