Farmers, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), and exporters belonging to Coimbatore, Tiruppur and the Nilgiris districts were oriented on the opportunities for scaling up revenue generation through value addition of agriculture products at a seminar conducted on Tuesday by the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

Farmers are selling Basmati (paddy) at an average Rs.2,200-2,500/quintal with over 15 per cent moisture level this year in Uttar Pradesh. This is causing distress as last year they fetched over Rs.3,000/quintal. Uttar Pradesh usually gets Basmati crop first among all the growing States since Pusa Basmati 1509 is comparatively a short duration variety and is transplanted earlier than in Punjab and Haryana.

The Government of India is encouraging the Balanced use of fertilizer in conjunction with the Organic and Biofertiliser on soil test based recommendation. Government is implementing the scheme titled  'PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness, Nourishment and Amelioration of Mother Earth (PM-PRANAM)' to incentivize States and Union Territories to promote the use of alternative fertilizers such as organic and bio-fertilizers for improving soil health and fertility and sustainable productivity, Under the programme, state Governments will be incentivized to the tune of 50% of fertilizer subsidy saved for promotion of organic and natural farming and organic fertilizers.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday announced schemes that the government will unveil in the next few days after cabinet approval, which include developing 100 horticulture clusters with an investment of Rs.18,000 crore in the next five years and the much-awaited national oilseeds mission with an outlay of Rs.6,800 crore.

India has exported non-basmati white rice worth USD 122.7 million during April-May this fiscal and the government is closely monitoring its production, availability and export scenario to assess suitable policy intervention, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

06 Aug, 2024 News Image Indian scientists identify rice varieties that can reduce fertiliser use, reaping environmental & financial gains.
Indian scientists have discovered significant natural variations in rice nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) along with associated traits and genes.  Published in the Journal of Plant Growth Regulation, the study identified that while high NUE rice varieties like Khira and CR Dhan 301 are long-duration crops, the Dhala Heera variety boasts both high NUE and a shorter growth duration, offering a significant advantage for farmers.
