Maize area up in early sowing in Karnataka.
Farmers in Karnataka are seen showing preference to plant crops such as maize and soyabean in the ongoing kharif 2025 cropping season, based on the early sowing data released by the State Agriculture Department. Till June 13, the kharif sowing is complete in about 20.42 lakh ha, about a fourth of the targeted area of 82.50 lakh ha for the season. The overall sown area under kharif crop till June 14 is up marginally at 20.42 lakh ha (20.22 lakh ha).

Issuance of preferential certificates under FTAs rises, signals higher trade pact use by exporters.
The number of preferential certificates of origin issued under free trade agreements implemented so far has recorded a healthy increase, rising to 7,20,996 in 2024-25 from 6,84,724 in 2023-24, indicating greater utilisation of trade pacts by Indian exporters, according to government data. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said India's trade under the preferential route is growing.

GI tag sought for Kollimalai Coffee and Jackfruit.
The Patent Information Centre of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai has filed applications seeking Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kollimalai Coffee and Kollimalai Palappazham. TNSCST is an autonomous organization under the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. 'We have instituted IPR cells at 40 educational institutions across Tamil Nadu. And each of them have been allocated a product which has a potential to earn a GI tag. These institutions do the research work,' S.Vincent, Member Secretary of TNSCST told The Hindu.

India's exports to US up 16.9c pc, imports dip 5.76 pc in May.
India's merchandise exports to the US rose by 16.93 per cent to USD 8.83 billion in May, while imports dipped by 5.76 per cent to USD 3.62 billion during the month, according to the commerce ministry data. During April-May, the country's exports to the US increased by 21.78 per cent to USD 17.25 billion, while imports rose by 25.8 per cent to USD 8.87 billion, the data showed.

APEDA hosts capacity building programme on export promotion.
In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural exports from Tripura, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in collaboration with the Superintendent of Agriculture, Bishalgarh Agri Sub-Division, organised a Capacity building Programme focused on the 'Role of APEDA in Export Promotion of Agri-Horti Products, APEDA Schemes, and Post- Harvest Management'.

FTA with India brings 'genuine' competitive advantage, UK Parliament told.
London, The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India places the UK at a 'genuine' competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, the House of Commons was told this week. During a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds fielded a series of questions on the advantages of the deal which has been pegged to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term.

Centre reduces Basic Custom Duty on major imported crude edible oils.
Centre has reduced the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on crude edible oils namely crude sunflower, soybean, and palm oils. Duty has been reduced from 20% to 10% resulting in the import duty differential between crude and refined edible oils from 8.75% to 19.25%.

India, China agree to hold 'functional talks' on trade, eco.
India and China have agreed to hold talks to discuss and resolve specific issues of concern, especially in the areas of economics and trade, during the visit of the vice foreign minister of China, Sun Weidong. They will also work towards expediting resumption of direct flights. Sources said the issue of rare earth metal supplies that have been hit by Chinese export controls was also raised by the Indian side during the talks.

Government aims to make J&K Rs 1 trillion agricultural economy by 2030: LG Manoj Sinha.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said the government's goal is to make every farmer in the Union Territory a proud stakeholder in India's journey towards becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047. Addressing the closing Ceremony of Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan at SKUAST Kashmir's Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops at Khudwani-Kulgam in south Kashmir, Sinha said it is a comprehensive strategy, designed to make J&K UT a robust Rs 1 trillion agricultural economy by 2030.
