The district administration of Odisha's Bhadrak has initiated measures to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Palua Ladu, a traditional sweetmeat made using simple ingredients like palua (arrowroot powder), semolina, and sugar. The GI tag will protect the authenticity of Palua Ladu, prevent imitation, and showcase Odisha's rich heritage on a global platform, the district collector said.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday said India requires a five per cent annual growth rate in agriculture and allied sectors to become a developed nation by 2047. Chouhan highlighted that foodgrain is grown on 93 per cent of farmland, but the growth is just 1.5 per cent.

Following rejection of 15 consignments of Indian mangoes by the US due to procedural lapses, the Indian authorities have claimed that the American inspectors did not follow the protocol. 'Instead of discussing the matter with relevant agencies or notifying the facility beforehand, they (the inspectors) directly reported the alleged issues to their senior offices in the US, resulting in the rejection of the 15 consignments,' Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB), a government arm housing an irradiation facility in Mumbai, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday held discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington to expedite negotiations on the first phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement between the two countries. Goyal is in Washington for a ministerial-level meeting to review the progress of negotiations of the trade pact.

May 21, 2025 News Image India mulls registration of non-Basmati rice with APEDA before exports.
The government is considering making registration of export contracts mandatory with its agri-export promotion body APEDA for non-Basmati rice before shipments are allowed by the Customs Department. This is on the lines of the current system in place for Basmati rice. The government may charge a fee of Rs.10-20/tonne for the registration. This will be used for promotion of Indian rice abroad.

Addressing the annual conference of vice chancellors from state agriculture universities (SAUs) and directors of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes, Chouhan directed ICAR to set and evaluate 3-4 concrete targets annually, stressing accountability and practical outcomes.

The government is reviewing and examining the mango shipments that the United States rejected earlier this month, sources said, adding that an error was noted in one of the approved irradiation facility in Mumbai. The Mumbai facility also witnesses the maximum volume of mangoes destined for the US. Attributing the rejection of 12 mango consignments in the US to an error in recording of data related to irradiation treatment on May 8 and 9, sources said that the error and its cause are being examined at a senior level by the facility management.
