India exported 4.24 lakh tonnes of sugar till April of the ongoing 2024-25 marketing year with maximum shipments of 92,758 tonnes to Somalia, trade body AISTA said on Monday. The sugar marketing year runs from October to September. Sugar exports for the 2024-25 marketing year in India were allowed on January 20, 2025. The total quantity permitted for export is 10 lakh tonnes.

To boost farmers' income, Uttar Pradesh has launched a new Kharif strategy targeting a 12 per cent increase in foodgrain and oilseed production -- from 260 lakh tonnes to 293 lakh tonnes, an official statement said on Monday. Officials have been directed to support this through improved crop planning, promotion of maize and paddy in terms of production and area, respectively, and the construction of 8,500 farm ponds for water conservation, it said.

USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board is forecasting that India will harvest a record 147 million metric tons of rice in the 2024-25 marketing year based on the Indian government’s Second Advanced Estimate and expected summer crop production.

Four companies have proposed investments amounting to nearly Rs 2,963 crore in Ujjain district, potentially generating employment for 13,150 people, according to the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC). The proposals include three food processing units. Amitex Agro Product plans to set up a food processing facility in Lalukhedi, Agar Malwa, with an investment of Rs 200 crore, creating around 800 work opportunities. Sanket Oils has proposed a Rs 75 crore food oil processing unit in Mandsaur, targeting 650 work opportunities. Safal Food intends to invest Rs 138 crore to establish pulses mill in Mandsaur, which is expected to generate employment for 800 individuals

In a major step towards expanding bilateral trade and investment engagement, the first round of negotiations for the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) concluded successfully today in New Delhi. The negotiations were held from 5-9 May, 2025. This development builds on the shared commitment to deepen economic ties and guidance given by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi during the visit of the Right Hon’ble Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand in March 2025. The FTA was launched during the meeting between Hon’ble Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and Hon’ble Mr. Todd McClay, Minister for Trade and Investment, Government of New Zealand on March 16, 2025.

The US soyabean industry is 'cautiously optimistic' that India will provide market access for its produce and would like the import duty to be 'as low as possible'. It is of the view that India could import soyabeans and produce more oil and oilmeal, instead of importing a huge quantity of cooking oils annually. It also does not think there could be any issue with genetically modified (GM) soyabeans.
