Iran, India eye expansion of trade routes, push for diversification.
According to Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), the 'Iran–India Trade Opportunities and Capacities Conference' brought together Hossein Bamiri, Iran’s commercial attaché in India; Khalid Khan, a member of the Iran Trade Center in Mumbai; and several trade delegations from both nations. Bamiri said Iran’s exports to India over the past decade have largely been limited to a narrow range of products including dates, pistachios, almonds, and petrochemicals, with little diversification in the export basket.

India and EU reaffirm Commitment to Conclude Ambitious FTA by the End of 2025, Deepen Strategic Trade Ties.
Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce & Industry of India, and Mr. Maroš Šef?ovi?, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, engaged in a forward-looking and substantive dialogue to address global trade challenges and reaffirm their shared resolve to conclude the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. This commitment builds on the strategic direction given by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen during the landmark visit of the EU College of Commissioners to New Delhi in February 2025.

APEDA mulls Export Growth Strategy for Agri and Processed Foods, calls stakeholders for a Chintan Shivir.
Government is committed to reducing logistical barriers and enhancing market access for Indian agri and processed food products. Strengthening India-Belgium Partnership: Shri Piyush Goyal Meets Belgian Minister of Foreign Trade Mr. Theo Francken and Minister-President of Flanders Mr. Matthias Diependaele.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, held a productive meeting in Brussels on 2nd May 2025 with Belgian Minister of Defence and Foreign Trade Mr. Theo Francken and Minister-President of the Flanders region Mr. Matthias Diependaele to strengthen the Indo-Belgian partnership across trade, technology, investment, and innovation. This engagement follows the March 2025 visit of HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium to India, where her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the shared ambition to unlock new avenues for collaboration in trade, technology, defence, agriculture, life sciences, innovation, skilling and academic exchanges. The over 300-member Belgian Economic Mission, led by Princess Astrid, infused fresh momentum into this dynamic bilateral relationship. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to building on this momentum to forge resilient, future-focused ties that enhance mutual growth and contribute to a more integrated global economic framework.

Shivraj Singh sets India’s rice target: reduce acreage by 5 million ha, raise production by 10 mt.
India has set a target to reduce acreage under rice by 5 million hectares (mh) and raise the production from the reduced area by 10 million tonnes (mt) to expand the cultivation of oilseeds and pulses, two major areas of concern where the country is struggling to attain self-sufficiency. Addressing an event organised by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi to release the world’s first genome edited rice varieties, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government has started preparing the '-5,+10' plan under which there will be target to reduce area by 5 mh and increase production by 10 mt.

Commerce Ministry holds industry consultation on India-US trade talks; seeks suggestions.
The commerce ministry on May 2 held a comprehensive consultation with the domestic industry on the proposed India-US trade agreement and sought suggestions to further deepen bilateral trade ties in a mutually beneficial manner, an official said. The stakeholder consultation was chaired by Special Secretary in the ministry Rajesh Agrawal. He is also India's chief negotiator for the India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA).

Angola President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco on Sunday invited Indian businesses to explore opportunities that can place the African nation at the centre of their export strategies, highlighting areas for mutual cooperation, including agriculture, pharmaceutical and renewable energy. Agri minister Chouhan unveils first genome-edited rice varieties, yield to rise up to 30%.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday unveiled the first genome-edited rice varieties ' DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) and Pusa DST Rice 1' developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to address challenges of climate change and boost rice yields by up to 30 per cent. 'It is an important day for us... Soon, these two new rice varieties will be made available to farmers,' Chouhan said, adding that the new varieties will enhance rice yields by 20-30 per cent, conserve water, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from rice cultivation.

India slaps 20% export duty on parboiled, milled rice for food safety
The Ministry of Finance has imposed a 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice and specific milled rice varieties, with the new rule taking effect from May 1. The decision is aimed at regulating rice exports and ensuring domestic food security, according to a Financial Express report. According to the circular issued by the ministry, the export duty applies to parboiled rice—including GI-recognized and other varieties—and “Other Rice” under specific customs classifications. This includes semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed.
