The Tamil Nadu government will take steps to explore the possibility of getting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for a tamarind variety from Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district, Minister T.M. Anbarasan said in the Assembly on Tuesday (April 22, 2025). Listing the requirements for obtaining a GI tag for a product, the Minister said Tamil Nadu ranked second among the States, with 69 GI tags.

It’s not looking all rosy for India’s flower exports, as the Trump tariffs are expected to weigh on this category, aside of big-ticket export items such as steel, aluminium and auto components, a Moneycontrol analysis has shown. US was the top importer of cut flowers from India, accounting for nearly a third of India’s overall flower exports in 2024-25. Of the $18.5 million worth of flowers exported in the first 10 months of FY25, around $5.5 million headed to the American shores, with another $3.1 million going to the United Arab Emirates and $2.7 million to Malaysia. Together, the three nations have a 60 percent share in India’s exports of cut and fresh flowers.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the contribution of agriculture to GDP has come down to 14 per cent over the years. This is because farming has not turned out to be as economically viable as it should have been. He said the share of the farm sector in GDP may rise to 22 per cent if Indian agriculture manages to replace half of the fossil fuel imports, estimated at about Rs.22 lakh crore per year, with biofuel.

Palm oil demand from top global buyers China and India is expected to increase as the vegetable oil is now reasonably priced compared to its rivals, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) said on Tuesday. Palm oil is now considered 'reasonably priced' at 3,900 ringgit ($889) per metric ton, the MPOC said in a statement, adding that prices are expected to remain supported at that level, underpinned by a recovery in soybean oil prices.
