GM technology is like ‘playing with nature’, says Agri Minister.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday said that genetically modified technology is 'like playing with nature', even if it helps increase productivity. He also indicated that there may be a further hike in the import duty on edible oils.

India may play bigger role in global value chains soon.
The NITI Aayog is working on a programme to improve India's penetration into global value chains for the growth of domestic micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), its chief executive BVR Subrahmanyam said on Wednesday. Observing that MSMEs are more affected by regulations than large companies, he said the PM has taken a major step towards deregulation and a task force under the cabinet secretary is working on it. Subrahmanyam was addressing a gathering after launching the 'Digital Excellence for Growth and Enterprise' (Dx-EDGE), a platform to empower MSMEs with the tools, knowledge and ecosystem needed to become future-ready, competitive and resilient.

Wheat stock limit expires on March 31; weekly stock disclosure begins from April 1.
The government has made it mandatory for the wheat industry and trade to declare weekly stock position on the portal starting April 1. The existing stock limit on wheat will expire on March 31. The Department of Consumer Affairs has said that to manage the overall food security and to prevent unscrupulous speculation, the Government of India has decided that traders, wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers and processors have to declare their stock position of wheat on the portal from April 1 and then, on every Friday till further orders.

Three-day talks on trade pact begin today: Govt weighs relief for US feedstock, cherries.
India could reduce customs tariffs on certain imports from the US, including feedstock such as gas and farm produce like cherries and pecan nuts, and seek easier regulatory barriers for its exports.

Bangladesh: 35,000 tonnes of rice arrive from India, Vietnam.
Two ships carrying 35,000 tonnes of rice have reached the Chattogram port. Of the two consignments, 22,500 tonnes of boiled rice transported by the MV Tanais Dream came from India. The rice was imported under an agreement through an international tender, the Ministry of Food said in a press release on Monday.

Market access to agricultural products, a long-protected area in Indian imports, could be on the agenda as a U.S. delegation, headed by Brendan Lynch, the U.S. Trade Representative’s point-person for South and Central Asia, travels to India on Tuesday (March 25, 2025) for a five-day visit.

Government has undertaken comprehensive measures to boost exports and strengthen trade competitiveness: MoS Jitin Prasada in LS.
The Government has taken various proactive measures aimed at enhancing domestic capacities, boosting exports, diversifying supply chains, exploring alternate sources of imports and fostering economic resilience, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Jitin Prasada, informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Tuesday. Quoted by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in a release, the MoS informed the Parliament that the Foreign Trade Policy, effective from April 01, 2023 is designed to integrate India more effectively into the global market, improve trade competitiveness, and establish the country as a reliable and trusted trade partner.

India Set to Maintain Sugar Export Quota on Ample Supplies.
India plans to maintain its one-million-ton sugar export quota for the current season, according to a person familiar with the matter, easing worries about possible supply restrictions that boosted global prices last week. The country will not bar outbound shipments as the world’s second-biggest producer will have enough stockpiles at the end of this season on Sept. 30, even after a drop in production, said the person, who asked not to be identified as the information is confidential. The country’s supplies are adequate to meet domestic demand for more than two months before crushing for next year’s crop begins, the person added.

India, US to focus on higher market access, lower import duty and trade barriers: Govt to Parliament.
India and the US would focus on increasing market access, reducing import duty and non-tariff barriers, and enhancing supply chain integration in the proposed bilateral trade agreement, the government told Parliament Tuesday.
